Alpine Climbing in the Villars Gryon Area of Switzerland

The Rhone Valley, and the Gryon area in particular is a “hidden gem” of alpine climbing.

There is a huge variety of mostly sport, but some traditional, climbing ranging from single pitch crags that are ideal for family excursions and introductory days with a picnic to the Mirroir d’Argentine - a full day’s excursion with 12 pitches of climbing (think Idwal slabs but 4 times as long and not as busy).

All tastes are catered for in and around the area with some 3000 routes within an hour of Gryon. So if this is your thing don’t forget to pack your rope, shoes, harnesses and quick draws.

Via Ferrata in the Villars Gryon Area of Switzerland

If you are a British hill walker who likes to push his or her envelope with a little scrambling then why not try some via ferrata.

In the Villars, Gryon Rhone, Valley area there are 5 via ferratas that each give a varied and exciting day out.

For beginners, Les Plan has a secret (not in any guide) via ferrata that is an ideal introduction and across the valley at Champery is also a good beginners excursion.

Like a little more excitement then take the cable cars up to either the halfway station at Glacier 3000 (Les Daiblerets) or Leysin and find the more exciting versions there. Details of these are available form the Villars tourist office or try; www.viaferrata.org
